The Bearded Collie, also known as Beardy is originally a herding dog imported from Scotland. It is thought to have its early origins in Poland, and it has also been know as the Highland Collie. It was traded into Scotland in 1514 in exchange for sheep and various other valuable items. It now acts as a regular family companion, and frequently appears on dog shows as well. It has a very fluffy and soft fur-coat, partially covering its eyes, and it is medium-sized, with a height of about 20 to 22 inches and a weight of about 40 to 60 pounds. The Bearded Collie is a very carefree and happy dog, full of vitality and energy. It loves activities such as herding, hiking, agility and guarding the grounds. The Bearded Collie breed is also very attention craving and will most likely become bored and maybe even start with various malicious activities if not enough time is spent with it. Its herding instincts may also sometimes come in to play when it’s around moving groups of people, and it might try to circle and nibble at for example arriving children or guests. It is however a very kind dog breed and will mostly likely not harm anyone. It is best to buy this breed specifically from a dog breeder or from a previous owner instead of a pet shop, since they require good training and lots of attention to grow up right. When it comes to shedding hair, this can be avoided almost completely if the dog is groomed weekly, and when they shed more frequently a more frequent grooming is inevitable as well.
The common lifespan for this breed is between 12 to14 years, the average being 12.8. They tend to be healthy their whole life, and the most common causes of death are old age and cancer.
