Blue Pearl ShrimpThe Blue Pearl Shrimp is quickly becoming popular in the American Dwarf Shrimp hobby. This shrimp is a blue color variant of the Neocaridina cf. zhangjiajiensis, the same variety that the Snowball Shrimp is selectively breed from. Some of the reasons they are gaining popularity is because of their ease of care, simple food requirements and their prolific breeding habits.

Blue Pearl Shrimp are rather undemanding when it comes to their care requirements. They require a well-established aquarium that has 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and less than 20 nitrates. Read the rest of this entry »

exotic petsAccording to the dictionary, the only thing that a pet requires to be considered an exotic pet is to be something that is not indigenous to a particular region. However, according to that definition, any poodle or even a little Cairn Terrier or even Siamese exotic cats would technically qualify as an exotic pet. So there must be something else that defines the parameters regarding what does and does not make a pet an exotic pet.

Further research indicates that exotic can also include anything that is considered to be “exotic in nature” or have to be something that is unique and in some instances, often misunderstood. This would certainly seem to be a much more applicable definition when it comes to exotic pets. Read the rest of this entry »

West Highland TerriersWest Highland Terriers or “Westies” originated in the West Highlands of Scotland. These terriers were originally bred to go after small game. It is said that their breeding came about after another terrier was mistakenly shot Another breeder had a few white pups in the litter and bred those exclusively to become the West Highland White terriers of today. A Westie is very friendly and has a jaunt about his step. This breed is very hardy and needs a walk every day for exercise. Westies have a better temperament than most terriers and will not snap as much. They are recognized by the AKC and other top breeding programs as a legitimate breed.

Westies are fun loving, and fun to be with. They need a small yard to be happy. They are also good companions to be with, and all the love that you could ask for. However, the life can go right out of them if you mistreat these precious dogs. They are good companions for those that have families and well behaved children. They are a bit high strung, but are well worth it to have as friends and companions. The heart of a warrior lies within their chests. Read the rest of this entry »

The Manx CatThe Manx cat is tailless, its body breaking off at the end with a seemingly abrupt finish. But, this cat is anything but limited by its lack of a tail. If anything, the Manx cat makes up for its missing tail with an endless supply of love and affection for its owners.

Originating on the Isle of Man, the Manx cat is legendary. There are numerous stories about how these darling cats lost their tails – from getting it stuck in the door of Noah’s ark to having its tail severed as a prize by Viking invaders, the Manx’s lack of a tail is steeped in tall tales.

A popular Isle of Man fairy tale, first published in 1911, says the cat arrived at Noah’s ark late because she was out mousing and when Noah shut the door, it closed on the cat’s tail. Another story tells of the King of the Cats, a simple Manx housecat by day, but a regal King by night who stalks the streets and commands his army. Read the rest of this entry »
