GPS Dog CollarKeeping track of your dog when it is off it leash can be nerve racking at best. One minute the dog is at your side and the next it is gone. You call but the dog does not return. Panic sets in and you rush about looking everywhere. If you are adjacent to large tracts of wild lands it may take you some time to locate your dog and in some case your best friend is never found. For many people this is like losing a child with all its grief and anguish. Hunting and large dog breeds must be allowed to run. Keeping them on a lead all the time is at best cruelty. New technology in the form of a GPS dog collar that tracks your dog may be the answer.

If you own a hunting dog like a beagle or bear hound that ranges miles from you it can be hard to hear the cry of the chase especially on windy days or if the dogs are in heavy cover. Read the rest of this entry »

German Shorthaired Pointer PuppyThe German Shorthaired Pointer is a human family oriented and hunter dog. They need quite a bit of exercise and are just as willing to hunt as they are to play games in the yard. They can tend to roam and they are known as escape artists so a properly fenced in yard for exercise is ideal. Some say that a six foot or higher fence is necessary. They can tend to be noisy dogs. They may chase cats and other pets so early socialization is key. They like older children. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog. Read the rest of this entry »

The Cairn TerrierThe first time the Cairn terrier was presented publicly was in 1909. The Leonberger: Large Lion DogThe Leonberger is a breed which comes from the city of Leonberg near the foothills of the Black Forest of Germany. The Mayor of Leonberg, Heir Heinrich Essig, developed this dog for one reason only, he wanted to breed a dog that would resemble the lion depicted on the crest of his town. He accomplished this by breeding a Saint Bernard to a Newfoundland, then breeding the offspring to a Pyrenean Mountain dog, in 1907. He thus produced what the rest of the dog world considered a “crossbreed”. However, the good looks and personality of the dog won over the hearts of many and it soon became popular not only in Germany but throughout Europe. The dog has the web foot typical of the Newfoundland and the burly good humor of both the Newf and the Saint, while the Pyrenean Mountain dog contributed some herding and guarding instinct. The Leonberger very nearly became extinct during the World Wars. Read the rest of this entry »
